The Fundacja Alberta Schweitzera says goodbye

Fundacja Alberta Schweitzera will end its work in Poland. This decision by the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung to halt its international efforts was not made lightly. The aim is to place even greater emphasis on improving the conditions in which so-called farm animals are kept in Germany. As part of the strategic realignment, a recently established subsidiary foundation in Romania will also be dissolved.

Since our foundation in 2017, our team in Poland has achieved numerous milestones or played a key role in achieving them. For example, our team was able to obtain public cage-free commitments from 42 Polish companies and successfully supported the transition for many of them. In addition, our team founded the carp coalition, whose work resulted in five food retailers ending the sale of live carp (Carrefour, Auchan, Tesco, Kaufland and Selgros). Moreover, over 10,000 people took part in Vegan Taste Week and tried out a plant-based diet. Together with Otwarte Klatki, we have launched a policy tracker that motivates companies to fulfill their cage-free commitments. Since 2021, we have also been working intensively on the implementation of the European Broiler Chicken Initiative. This initiative remains active, supported by Otwarte Klatki in Poland and Albert Schweitzer Foundation in Germany.

We would like to thank all our supporters from the bottom of our hearts – and especially our dedicated employees, who have worked tirelessly for the animals over the past seven years. A big thank you also to all the companies with whom we have been able to advance animal welfare in Poland.

The Fundacja Alberta Schweitzera website will remain online until the final closure, but no new content will be published. If you would like to stay informed about animal welfare issues and get involved in animal welfare in Poland, we recommend our partner organizations: We would like to thank Otwarte Klatki, Compassion in World Farming, Eurogroup for Animals, Viva, the Green REV Institute and Humane Society International for their valuable cooperation in recent years and their tireless efforts for animal welfare in Poland.
